Oh, Where The Buffalo Roams and the Joys of Under Paintings...

'Where The Buffalo Roams' is the first in a series I've been working on. I call them 'this is my home' series because, that seems to be what the buffalo is saying, "Welcome. Come on in and sit a spell."

I thought I'd  show some of the processes my artwork goes through.

This is the sketch of the buffalo along with the fluorescent yellow sky. Most of my paintings get an under painting. It's more fun than leaving the blank, white canvas as an under coat!
For the 'This Is My Home' Series, I decided to use fluorescent acrylic paints as an under painting.
I then added the first coat of the actual sky's blue color. It was very tempting to keep the fluorescent pink of the buffalo and orange of the plains. (Something I might revisit later). :)

And here is the finished Buffalo painting...

And a side view of 'Where The Buffalo Roams' showing the painted gallery wrapped stretched canvas.

The buffalo artwork is painted on a 6" x 4" x 3/4" wrap around stretched canvas. The sides are painted as shown. It comes ready to hang, using framing wire and eye screws, just hang on the wall and enjoy!

Oh, and by the way, it did warm up a little today. It was a balmy 10 degrees out. This week it's suppose to get into the 20's and 30's. Talk about a heat wave!

New Zoo Faces Painting, Video Showing Giraffe Painting Coming to Life, and Brrr...Is It Cold Outside!

December has arrived with some of the coldest temps we've had all year. It seems our area, Northeast Nebraska, has been in the deep freeze this past week. We went from almost 60 degree weather Thanksgiving week-end to the current below zero weather we're having right now. Brrr! Not even our Collie, Monroe, and Great Pyrenees puppy, Bear, wants to stay outside.

I've been working on larger sized artwork and am still continuing the 'Zoo Faces' series. I just finished a portrait of three giraffes titled 'Giraffes, We three.' I composed the painting from reference photos I took during a visit to Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. The baby and several female giraffes were waiting to be fed hay by the zoo keepers. Sunlight streaming in from the windows in the Giraffe House illuminated the giraffes. I decided to keep the background simple by using a triad color combination. The rust playing against the teal blue also created a dramatic backdrop for the giraffes.

Most of my afternoon was spent photo shopping the giraffe painting and creating a new video of it. And here's the video...

Stay warm!
